Poppies are one of our favorite flowers, so delicate and beautiful. We created poppies using materials from recycle bin like cellophane paper and egg cartons, combining a bit of painting, crafting and fine motor practice as kids put them together. Take a look at instructions and make couple cellophane paper poppies with kids to decorate your home.

Materials to make cellophane paper poppy flowers
Several things are needed to create these lovely poppy flowers:
- cellophane paper ( from recycle bin )
- egg carton ( from recycle bin )
- small buttons (find here: United States | Canada | United Kingdom)
- green chenille stems / pipe cleaners (find here: United States | Canada | United Kingdom)
- acrylic paint – green and red (find here: United States | Canada | United Kingdom)
- scissors and brush
Steps to make poppies
Start by cutting circles from cellophane paper and coloring them red with acrylic paint. It will be a new experience for kids because they can’t fully cover cellophane paper with paint. It will remain transcedulent.
While painted cellophane paper gets dry, take care of egg cartons. Cut pieces of an egg carton for sepal and color it with green paint.
Make a hole in the middle for a stem both on cellophane paper cycle and egg carton cups. My toddler helped with painting because it really doesn’t have to be perfect and older daughter helped put together poppies.
When paint dries, cut a small hole in the middle of the flower (fold it several times and simply snip the top). Pull the pipe cleaner through a button, secure the end. Then pull the cellophane paper and all together through the egg carton piece. Pull until button sits well in egg carton.
And there you go, you’re finished! Now you have a bouquet of lovely poppies!
When can you make cellophane poppies?
There are couple occasions where poppies are presented as symbols, like Remembrance day, Armistice or Veteran day. They can also be made during summer as a seasonal craft. Or you can make them as a gift to mom for Mother’s day.
