With toddlers and preschoolers, one of the most important things to work on before they become of the school age, are fine motor skills. Join us in this simple play – drinking straws fine motor activity.
Materials for Fine Motor Play with Drinking Straws
Supplies we used:
- tootpicks
- drinking straws
- foam block (from recycle bin)
- star beads (optional)
- scissors
Foam block came from the recycle bin and it’s something that came with a box when we purchased a new appliance.
Before starting with this activity, you will need to cut drinking straws to be approximately 2″ in lenght (3 cm).
Let’s Play!
To set up drinking straws fine motor activity, you will need to prepare foam block with toothpicks in advance – simply push the toothpicks in the block trying to get them in a row, approximately at the same distance from another. This doesn’t need to be totally precise.
Invite your toddler to place pieces of drinking straw through the toothpicks. Simple and effective fine motor skill practice!
My toddler showed interest in this activity and I decided to give her a try with another medium – small star plastic beads.
It was a bit harder for her to place tiny beads through toothpicks than earlier with straws but she made it!
And for last try, she decided to place drinking straws on top of star beads! Don’t you just love how simple things get kids occupied?
