We are five weeks into our A-Z of Sensory Play with the letter E. With Halloween around the corner the letter E gave us the perfect opportunity for eye inspired play. We came up with Icy Eye Monsters Sensory Play using googly eyes! This sensory activity is super easy to set up and provides a number of sensory experiences as well as fine motor skill practice and a little lesson about color mixing!
I wanted my son to explore the sensory element of ice so we created googly eye colored monsters. I made three batches of yellow, red and green monsters by adding Wilton Food Coloring to the water. And then adding a variety of different sized googly eyes. In the green water, I placed large individual googly eyes. In the red, I placed two medium sized googly eyes and in the yellow water, I added a number of small google eyes to each ice cube tray. I placed the three trays in the freezer overnight.
The next day my son helped me to take the google eye monsters out of the plastic ice cube trays. This proved to be a good fine motor skills activity as the monsters were reluctant to come out of the trays. We placed the ice cubes into our favorite green sensory bin, along with a tub of fine motor skill tools.
As the google eye monsters began to melt we attempted to pick them up using a variety of tools. We thought our Prepara Super Scoopers would be the easiest, but it was difficult to get the ice monster to stay inside.
The Gator Grabber proved to be too small to handle the ice cubes, but the Jumbo Tweezer picked up the ice monsters easily.
By now the ice monsters had started to melt and coloured water started to line the bottom of our sensory bin. I gave my son a choice as to what water we added to the bin. He decided to continue with the Halloween theme and asked for orange water.
I added orange Wilton Food Colouring to a bowl of water and poured it into our sensory bin. I placed a few measuring spoons and formula scoops next to the bin. The remaining ice monsters melted quickly and we were left with orange google eye sensory soup.
Since we had tried picking up the ice cubes with several different fine motor skill tools we decided to see it if was easier or harder now the googly eyes were floating in the water. My son concluded that it was much easier to pick up the ice monsters with the Jumbo Tweezers rather than the individual googly eyes!
My son spent ages trying to scoop out the googly eyes and forming his own monsters within the spoons. He would cheer every time he managed to get different sized eyes into the spoon. “Spoon Monsters” that had the same sized eyes were quickly poured away.
