We are nearly at the end of our A to Z Fine Motor Skills series. The letter X always causes issues as there are so few things that begin with that letter. After much deliberation we finally decided to create an X Marks The Spot Fine Motor Play activity.
We would be experimenting to find different ways to create the letter X using fine motor skills.
We first explored the letter X using stickers. My son made an X using a pencil on a piece of card and then went over the lines with small round stickers. Taking the sticker off of the page can be quite tricky and is a skill that took my son a long time to learn.
He now knows to slightly bend the paper in order for the sticker to lift away from the backing. He positioned the stickers along the lines until he had completed the letter X.
Next he used a Bingo Marker Pen. After drawing another X he had to hold the Bingo Marker pen correctly and push it down onto the paper. In order to leave a red mark on the paper my son had to tilt his hand more than he would if he was writing. This is an ideal activity for a child who uses a fisted grasp.
Finally my son tried using my old teaching stampers. I have collected a large range over the years. My son enjoyed choosing which one to use, picking it out of the tray and pushing the stamper down onto the paper. The knobs made the stampers easy to hold. My son did need to push down fairly hard in order for the stamper to work.
After my son had explored all three methods he couldn’t resist going back to using the stickers. He enjoyed creating more X Marks The Spot signs with the stickers.
