Winter starts in 2 days! Would you believe it? Not sure what it’s like where you live but here there is still no sign of snow! And kids are anticipating snowy Christmas!
Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of winter fun inside! So, we have made snowflakes by salting a painting. Very much fun for kid! Things needed for this art activity are pretty basic and you surely have most at home:
- watercolor paper
- masking tape
- watercolors
- salt (in salt shaker)
- brush.
If you have a younger child, tape a masking tape in a shape of snowflake on a paper yourself. Kids age 5+ could do it by themselves after you show them how to do it. Let them color over paper with dark blue watercolors and use shaker to salt over wet paint. Salt will leave amazing shapes as it melts. When complete paper is covered, leave it aside to dry completely. Once it’s dry, remove masking tape to get a white snowflake shape. My daughters were inpatient so we had some tears on our snowflakes.
I had to give my toddler several sheets of paper because she loved painting and salting snow. She was still painting and salting 4 papers later. So, a warning: have few sheets set aside as a spare!
